• DHCD has requested technical assistance from the Department of Justice [DOJ] concerning state regulations in building code and ADA areas outside scope, such as public phones
• Application pending response from DOJ
• Would like to secure a SILC liaison at DHCD to help monitor application process. Barrett and DuBois will collaborate with the DHCD HR Director to locate contact. This liaison would not be counted as Ex-Officio status which would require an "official" appointment
Staff Kriner reported on ideas for SILC outreach and education shared by Liz Hayes, Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation, Chair of the 2009 Implementation Team Task Groups on Housing barriers, enforcement, and awareness. Ms Hayes indicated that the SILC may wish to support DPOR Training and Outreach to the disabled community and advocates on the accessibility guidelines in multi-family housing as well as reasonable accommodation/modification awareness and the differences in the requirements for private and federally funded properties. Discussion ensued regarding SILC support for this type of activity. A Subcommittee was formed to build a proposal for supporting statewide education/training through the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation and present in April. Members included Barrett, Prokop, and Ward-Solomon
Ward-Solomon provided updates on the Virginia Easy Living Program and indicated that it may fit with the DPOR outreach and education efforts.
Kriner provided an overview of the “It’s Our Story” program. Kriner discussed possibility of hosting this program in Virginia and it’s relevance to VA SILCs youth development goals in the SPIL. A subcommittee to include [Brandt, Mathena, Dixon, Prokop, Ward-Solomon] will work with Staff Kriner to develop plan.
